Wintix and Vista (no replies)

First, Wintix will work on Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. Period.

There seems to be some confusion about Vista. On one hand, computer stores are saying that Vista is all they have. On the other hand, there are stories about users paying to re-format their computers with Windows XP. Both stories are true.

You can still purchase XP - but you need to go where business computers are sold.
HP's website:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/12454-12454-64287-321860-3328893.html

Dell's website:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/desktops?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

Whether you get XP or Vista, make sure it is the right edition. This means "XP Professional" or "Vista Business"

Vista will work, but at half the speed of a comparability equipped XP computer. It slows down even further after about 6 months of use. That is the main reason we prefer XP. The compatibility and drivers issues do not seem to be a problem. Most of our customers use pretty standard equipment.

The highly touted "Aero" interface is cute. But that's all. It has no advantages. It's not even original. Sun Microsystems developed a very similar semi-transparent interface for their Glassfish server.

Tip:
Want to save yourself $462? Rather than Microsoft Office, get Open Office (OpenOffice.org). It works pretty much the same as Microsoft Office. It has all the bells and whistles. And, it's free.

Publicity report suggestion (3 replies)

The suggestion came up that the publicity section be changed. Right now, there is one list for all the publicity *for all shows.* This is easy to understand and use but there is an inherent flaw. The flaw is that the publicity cannot change. When the publicity is put into use, the different choices are often determined by what the promoter and marketing department need to collect.

For instance, they may have a newspaper ad for a single show. That newspaper ad would not apply to other shows, therefore, it should not be available to the other shows.

Another limitation is that the current system does not keep track of older shows well. Any changes made to the current publicity codes automatically make older publicity entries invalid.

The obvious solution is to have a separate set of publicity that is a permanent part of each show. This is do-able but there are some questions:
1. Will each show need a checkbox to use publicity? That way, the publicity switch would no longer be global.

2. If the default publicity for each show is built from the master list, what happens if the master list gets changed? Should each show have it's list automatically updated? Or, should each show be updated separately? For Jamye (who has 260 shows to maintain) this could be a major problem.
